The Koran on Christianity

The Koran, the holy book of Islam, makes numerous references to Christianity. In terms of the main sources of Islamic theology, Christianity is highly regarded. The Koran suggests there is a great similarity between Christians and Muslims. Furthermore, the Koran states that there is a great bond between both religions.

The Koran declares, ‘Those who believe (in the Qur’an), those who follow the Jewish (scriptures), and the Sabians and the Christians and who believe in Allah and the Last Day, and work righteousness, on them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve’ (Qur’an 5:69). According to this verse, Muslims, Jews, Sabians and Christians who live a righteous life will all attain salvation on the Day of Resurrection.

The verse also affirms that all four religions are held in high esteem in Islam. This declaration serves as a reminder that the goal of a Muslim is to strive to know his own faith while understanding and respecting the beliefs of other religions. The Koran states ‘unto each of you have We appointed a right way and a method of worship…’ (Qur’an 6:48). Hence, it is obligatory for each individual to observe his or her faith, be it Islam or Christianity.

In addition, the Koran affirms the notion that prophets from all of the Abrahamic religions are held in high esteem and should be respected, which forms an important part of Muslim theology. This is emphasized in the following verse ‘say: We believe in Allah, and that which has been revealed unto us, and that which has been revealed unto Abraham, and Ishmael, and Isaac, and Jacob, and the tribes, and that which Moses and Jesus received, and that which the prophets received from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and unto Him we have surrendered’ (Qur’an 2:136).

The Koran further states that the teachings of Jesus were presented in a righteous way and its values should be held in high regard ‘That which We reveal unto thee of the Scripture is the Truth, confirming that which was (revealed) before it’ (Qur’an 5:48).

In summary, Islam presents Christianity with great respect, admiration and reverence. The Koran calls on Muslims to show respect to followers of Christianity and exhorts them to familiarize themselves with Christian teachings and to have a deep understanding of their faith.

Freedom of Worship

Islam however, claim that Christianity is not a valid monotheistic faith and specifically, reject the idea of Jesus being the literal son of God and deny his death and resurrection. In return, Christianity claims Islam is a “false religion” founded by a man and rejects the idea that God would use a human being to convey his message. It is in this context of conflicting monotheistic faith that Islam calls on Muslims to accept and acknowledge the right of people of all faiths, including Christians, to practice their beliefs in a free and harmonious manner.

The Koran outlines the innate right that people have to choose their own faith. ‘Let there be no compulsion in religion’ (Quran 2:256). This verse emphasises that true faith cannot be imposed on somebody, rather it must be accepted of one’s own free will. Moreover, the Koran calls on Muslims to not only accept but to respect those of different faiths, proclaiming ‘God does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion and do not expel you from your homes — from being righteous toward them and acting justly toward them; indeed, God loves those who are just.’ (Quran 60:8).

There is consensus among Islamic scholars that Muslims must protect the right of non-Muslims to practice their religion freely. Not only should non-Muslims be afforded religious freedom, it is incumbent upon the Muslim society to safeguard the practice of non-Islamic faiths in their midst.

Interfaith Initiatives

An important tenet of Islam as stipulated in the Koran is interfaith tolerance and respect. ‘O people of scripture, let us come to a common word between us and you: that we shall not worship except God; that we shall not associate anything with Him’ (Quran 3:64).

This particular verse serves to propagate the notion of interfaith dialogue, a cornerstone of Islamic theology. It calls on believers of both Abrahamic religions to come to a mutual understanding and to set aside their differences. The Koran also states that God has ordained upon the believers to “cover with a garment the fault of a Muslim (brother)” which serves to extend the principle of Islamic interfaith dialogue further.

In modern society, interfaith initiatives are an important aspect of Muslim Orthodoxy. Although differences exist between both religions, interfaith dialogue bridges the gaps and creates an atmosphere of understanding and respect that allows both sides to come together as one.

Interfaith initiatives make up a major component of the Islamic faith. By working together, both parties can make progress towards mutual understanding, respect and tolerance. However, interfaith initiatives should not be seen as a call for assimilation or conversion. Rather, the goal is to recognise religion as a source of understanding and dialogue, ultimately striving to cultivate an environment of understanding and respect.

The Christian Perspective

The Christian perspective is that Jesus is the son of God, who died and rose again to deliver salvation to mankind. This belief is foreign to the core tenets of Islam, and as such, it cannot be accepted as valid by Muslims. Therefore, Islam offers Christians a level of respect and admiration, but cannot accept the notion of the trinity and Jesus’ death and resurrection.

There is an ongoing debate within the Christian community about how to respond to Muslims who disagree with their beliefs. Christianity encourages openness and dialogue between both sides, although some scholars maintain that it is more beneficial to avoid theological exchanges, as it can cause unnecessary rifts between the two communities.

Regardless, the key message is that each religion should extend tolerance and respect towards the other. This can be achieved through mutual understanding and dialogue, and not by attempting to impose beliefs upon each other.
