Hinduism and the Concept of God

Hinduism is one of the oldest religions of the world and it is believed to have been with us since around 1500 BCE. Its beliefs, traditions, and practices are based on multiple texts, which have been passed down through generations. Hinduism is one of the oldest as well as one of the largest living religions. The core belief in Hinduism is of the divine unity of the cosmos, the understanding that all things that exist are part of a single formless One.

The Hindu conception of God is vast, varied, and complex. Hindus have many gods, but each one is seen as another form (or avatar) of the one, sole God. There is a separation between the physical and transcendental realms. The physical realm contains the gods of earthly chance and luck, such as Ganesha and Lakshmi, and the transcendental realm is the domain of the one God who transcends all things. Due to this vastness of the concept of God, it is often challenging for scholars and practitioners to define Hinduism’s view of God with exact precision.

The metaphysical aspects of God can be understood from several Hindu doctrines, such as Advaita Vedanta which emphasizes that Brahman – the “Supreme Spirit” is the one and only Reality and the concept of Brahman. Brahman is seen as being beyond all attributes, without form or limitation; an infinite, eternal being or energy source. Brahman is not seen as a creator or god, but rather as the underlying force behind the cosmos. It is the Ultimate Reality that binds all living beings together.

The idea of the multiple aspects of God are seen in other religious symbols and figures. For example, the Trimurti of Vishnu, Shiva, and Brahma represent the three aspects of the divine – Creation, Preservation, and Destruction. These three aspects of God represent the cycle of life as we know it – creating, sustaining, and destroying. Other aspects of God are Vishnu, Narayana, Surya, and Indra. The idea of multiple gods is generally accepted, although there is a variety of different interpretations of these gods.
