Christianity and Hinduism are two major religions that have significant differences in their history and beliefs. From the beginning, Christianity has viewed Hinduism as its polar opposite, with Christianity teaching salvation through Jesus’ death and resurrection and Hinduism teaching Moksha, or redemption from the cycle of death and rebirth. In recent years, the relationship between the two faiths has improved, but the differences remain pronounced.

Christianity’s point of view on Hinduism largely centers around the differences in the approach to redemption. Christian theology holds that one must accept Jesus as their Savior in order to be saved and escape eternal damnation, while Hinduism holds that one needs to pursue Moksha through various spiritual practices. Additionally, Christianity upholds the concept of a single God while Hinduism embraces polytheism with its many gods and goddesses.

Dr. Robert Heimburger, professor at the Seattle Pacific University, explains: “Although Christianity and Hinduism are two very different religions, there is some common ground that can be found between them. There is a strong emphasis on human responsibility, for example, and on living a life of moral uprightness. This is an area that Christians and Hindus can find common agreement upon”.

In spite of these differences, both religions have much to offer one another, if viewed from the perspective of understanding and respect. For example, Hinduism carries with it an ancient wisdom that can provide insight into the life of a spiritual body and soul. Similarly, Christianity’s emphasis on love and grace offers something that may provide comfort in difficult times.
