The Torah

Judaism is one of the world’s oldest and most widely practiced religions. It is based on the belief in one all-powerful God who created the world and gave humans the gift of free will. The basic tenets of Judaism are encapsulated in sacred texts, the most important of which is the Torah. The Torah, or the five books of Moses, is the foundation of all Jewish teachings and provides the basis for Jewish Law. It tells the story of creation, the history of the Jewish people, and outlines God’s laws, which Jews must follow.

The Written Torah

The Written Torah is the physical manifestation of the Torah found in the form of a scroll. The Written Torah is usually hand-written, on either a long cylinder of parchment or a scroll. This form of the Torah contains not only the Five Books of Moses, but also the prophetic books, which are all considered part of the Written Torah. These include: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy.

The Oral Torah

The Oral Torah is the unrecorded, verbal version of the traditional Jewish law and teachings. It is considered to be just as important as the Written Torah, because it contains important information that is needed to interpret the written version of the Torah. The Oral Torah consists of the teachings and commentaries of the rabbis throughout the ages. It is not in written form, but is conveyed through oral traditions and passed down through the generations.

The Talmud

The Talmud is a compilation of written records, commentaries, and teachings on the Torah. It was written approximately two thousand years ago and is comprised of various volumes and commentaries from various rabbis and scholars throughout the ages. The Talmud provides insight into and analysis of the traditions contained in the Torah, helping to explain and interpret its meaning.
