The Founding of Judaism

Judaism is one of the world’s oldest monotheistic religions, and its first leader is still shrouded in mystery. Its roots trace back more than three thousand years to ancient Judea, where it first took shape and flourished. The Jews of Judea are believed to have had a sense of monotheism and chosen-ness long before the codification of Jewish law, while the beginnings of formal Judaism can be found in the minutiae of the Torah, and the centuries of rabbinic commentaries that followed it.

The traditional names of the founders of Juda Judaism are Avraham, Yitzchak, and Yaakov, also known as Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. These three fathers of Jahdaiim are not actually mentioned in the Torah, but they are part of the oral tradition of Judaism, as described in the Midrash (commentary on the Tanach). These three patriarchs are said to have held an all-encompassing covenant between themselves and God, known as the Covenant of Birthright.

There is an alternative view from those who do not accept the traditional interpretation of Jewish history, namely, that Jewish law and tradition emerged as a result of the migration of Jews from Judea to Babylon. This view suggests that the early Jews did not have a sense of law and that it was during this period of wandering that the Jews developed a formal, structured system of law and spirituality.

The first leader of Judaism is often referred to simply as the Patriarch, or the first High Priest. While there is no specific name given to this leader in the sources, there are some clues which could be used to make an educated guess. It is generally accepted that the first leader of Judaism was a priest, either a High Priest or a Levite. It is also believed that this person also held an immense amount of authority over the other Jews.
