The world’s three Abrahamic religions, Christianity, Islam and Judaism, all share a common origin. While they all celebrate heritage and common beliefs, there are distinct differences between the three in terms of beliefs, practices and observances. In discussing the major difference between Christianity, Islam and Judaism, it’s helpful to understand the history of each religion and how it evolved over time.

Christianity is the largest of the three religions, with approximately two billion adherents worldwide. It began with the teachings of Jesus Christ and its growth is believed to have taken shape through the spread of Christianity along the Roman Empire. Central to Christianity’s beliefs is the divinity of Jesus Christ, the concept of salvation through faith, and the fellowship of the body of believers. It is a monotheistic religion, with one God that is believed to be creator and provider of all things.

Islam is the second largest religion in the world, with nearly 1.7 billion adherents. It is a monotheistic faith founded by Prophet Muhammad in the 7th century AD. Islamic beliefs revolve around submission to Allah, the mercy and compassion of Allah, and the purpose of life being to serve Allah. Muslims observe the five pillars of belief in order to express devotion to Allah – these pillars include profession of faith, prayer, fasting during Ramadan, pilgrimage to Mecca and social responsibility through charity.

Judaism is the third largest Abrahamic religion, with about 14 million adherents worldwide. It began some 4,000 years ago with the teachings of Abraham and Moses and continued through the formation of the Jewish nation. The central core of Judaism’s belief system is the monotheistic faith in Yahweh, Judaism’s God, and the observance of the Ten Commandments. Though cultures in the different parts of the world may practice different forms of Judaism, they all agree that they are followers of Yahweh.
