In religious and cultural circles, the pursuit of leadership is an ancient and ongoing endeavor. Jewish leadership has evolved throughout history, from the High Priests in Biblical times to the Chief Rabbis of today. This article dives into the current leader of Judaism and looks at the vision they bring to the faith.

Today, the Grand Rabbi is the closest representation of the contemporary leader of Judaism, however, individual rabbis also form part of this leadership. The Grand Rabbi is the most senior religious leader in a Jewish community, having authority over spiritual, religious and communal matters. The Grand Rabbi is traditionally elected and has a great amount of influence in their local community.

The current Grand Rabbi is Mirvis, a British rabbi and Chief Rabbi of the United Kingdom. He is the first rabbi to assume the position since 1991, and is widely respected for his progressive attitude to modern issues. Rabbi Mirvis seeks to bring together all different forms of Judaism, from Orthodox to Reform. He is inspiring leaders to pursue a more tolerant and open faith, with the belief that Judaism’s central theme of compassion should be the guiding force.

Rabbi Mirvis has been quoted as saying that “we can all make a piece of Judaism better for ourselves and for others.” He believes it is vital for modern rabbis to support this idea and emphasize it to their students and followers. Under his guidance, many synagogues have become havens of inclusivity, with acceptance and respect as their core values.
