Buddhism is a religion founded by Siddhartha Gautama, also known as the Buddha, in the 5th century BCE. The Buddha was born a prince in present-day Nepal and, at the age of 29, he decided to leave his comfortable life to search for truth. After six years of asceticism and meditation, he attained enlightenment and began to teach others what he had learned. His followers came to be known as Buddhists.

Buddhism is based on the Four Noble Truths: that suffering exists; that suffering has a cause; that there is an end to suffering; and that there is a path leading to the end of suffering. This path is known as the Eightfold Path.

The Three Jewels of Buddhism are the Buddha, the Dharma (the Buddha’s teachings), and the Sangha (the community of monks and nuns).

Buddhism teaches that there are many gods, but that they are all ultimately manifestations of the one true reality. This ultimate reality is sometimes referred to as Nirvana.
