Buddhism is one of the major religions of the world and has been practiced by millions of people for over 2,500 years. Although it is largely associated with Asia, Buddhism actually began in India. The story of Buddhism begins with a man named Siddhartha Gautama, who was born into a wealthy family around 2,600 years ago. Siddhartha was not content with his life of luxury and began to search for a way to end the suffering he saw all around him. After many years of study and contemplation, Siddhartha attained enlightenment and became the Buddha, or “awakened one.” The Buddha taught that the way to end suffering is through detachment from the material world and the practice of compassion. His teachings spread throughout Asia and Buddhism became one of the largest religions in the world.<\/p>\n
