Buddhism is a religion that began in India about 2,500 years ago. Siddhartha Gautama, the man who became the Buddha, was born into a wealthy family. He had everything he could possibly want, but he was not happy. Siddhartha left his home and family to find out what was causing his unhappiness. After six years of searching, he finally found the answer: the cause of suffering is desire. Siddhartha realized that the way to end suffering is to end desire.<\/p>\n

Buddhism spread to other parts of Asia, and today there are about 500 million Buddhists in the world. Buddhists live in many different countries, including India, Sri Lanka, Burma, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, China, Japan, Korea, and Tibet. In the United States, there are about 1 million Buddhists.<\/p>\n
