The Quran, Islam’s central text, contains verses that speak highly of Christians and Jews, describing them as “People of the Book” who will be rewarded by Allah for their good deeds. At the same time, the Quran also describes Muslims as the “best of all people.” Consequently, Islam teaches that Muslims are to treat People of the Book with respect and kindness.<\/p>\n

Islam has a complex and varied view of other religions. On one hand, Islam is a monotheistic religion that believes in the absolute unity of God, and on the other hand, Muslims believe that Prophet Muhammad was the last and final messenger of God. This means that Muslims view other religions as either misguided or incomplete. In general, however, Muslims are taught to respect the people of other religions and to treat them with compassion and justice.<\/p>\n

This is likely due to the fact that unemployment, crime and corruption are seen as bigger issues. When asked specifically about Christian-Muslim hostilities, few Muslims said that these hostilities are widespread. Muslims regard Christians as People of the Book because they follow the teachings of the Bible. However, Muslims also believe that Christians are kafirs (unbelievers) because they believe in the Trinity. Therefore, Muslims contend that Christians must be dhimmis (religious taxpayers) under Sharia law.<\/p>\n

Muslims who convert to another faith are considered apostates and are subject to punishment, including death, under most interpretations of sharia law. Some Muslim clerics equate this apostasy to treason, a crime punishable by death.<\/p>\n

From the verses it is clear that Muslims are required to treat others, including non-Muslims, with justice and fairness. This includes guaranteeing their freedom and rights. Muslims should also fear Allah in all their dealings, as He is well-aware of everything they do.<\/p>\n

The Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) interactions with non-Muslims in Mecca and Medina were generally peaceful, as long as the non-Muslims did not behave treacherously or resort to violence. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) formed alliances and coalitions with many of the non-Muslim tribes in Mecca and Medina, and these relationships were generally cordial and cooperative. However, there were also some instances of conflict and violence, usually stemming from the actions of a few individuals on either side. Overall, though, the Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) interactions with non-Muslims were generally positive and served to create a more peaceful and stable environment in Mecca and Medina.<\/p>\n

There is a general consensus amongst Muslim scholars that Islam prohibits forced conversion of people towards any religion. This is based on verses in the Quran such as “Let there be no compulsion in religion: Truth stands out clear from Error” (Quran 2:256) and (Quran 18:29). These verses make it clear that Islam values freedom of religion and belief, and that forced conversions go against the very tenets of the faith.<\/p>\n

Muslims believe that Jews and Christians have strayed from God’s true faith but hold them in higher esteem than pagans and unbelievers. They call Jews and Christians the “People of the Book” and allow them to practice their own religions. Muslims respect Jews and Christians as they are considered to be “People of the Book”. Muslims and Jews have common ancestors and beliefs. Both groups believe in One God, although they have different interpretations of Him. Muslims also believe in many of the prophets of the Old Testament, including Abraham, Moses, and Jesus.<\/p>\n

Muslims scholars reject the Christian Gospels because they say that they are not the original teachings of Jesus. They say that the Gospels have been corrupted over time. Some scholars have suggested that the original Gospel may be the Gospel of Barnabas.<\/p>\n

The Quran tells Muslim men not to marry Non-Muslim women, and it tells Muslim women not to marry Non-Muslim men, but it makes an allowance for Muslim men to marry women of the People of the Book (usually Jews, Christians, and Sabians). No such allowances are made for women. This is because the Quran says that men are the guardians of women and are responsible for their protection and well-being. Therefore, it is preferable for a Muslim woman to marry a Muslim man who can provide her with a secure and stable life.
