Under the umbrella term ‘Christianity’, there is a variety of controversial defining beliefs about whether God and Jesus are the same Person; indeed, opinions range widely even within Christian denominations themselves. Some would say that God is one Person, and Jesus another; for others, the concept is far more abstract and nuanced.

Whether we believe in a metaphorical or physical interpretation of these heavenly figures, we can agree that they are intertwined – the main overarching source of one dogma can be the next question of the other. Ultimately, the interpretation of this connection will depend on each church, denomination and individual’s particular teachings, as outlined by their particular religious text.

On a literal level, the Bible states that Jesus is the Son of God, sent down to Earth as a man, to make pleas for mankind’s forgiveness and release us from our spiritual wrong-doings. This implies that God and Jesus are, in a sense, related. This idea is further supported by theological experts when considering a more typical, non-literal interpretation.

When we look to other interpretations, as detailed by theologians, we see a less physical relationship between the two: Jesus is a representation of God on Earth, acting in a way that we, as people, are able to understand and relate to. Furthermore, it is argued that Jesus’ human nature allows God’s notions of compassion, mercy and love to be better exemplified. Thus, theologians would not rule the two out as one – they would interpret them as two parts forming a whole.

It is also worth considering Jesus’ reported statements in the Bible: he often refers to God as his Father and appears to act on behalf of God, when carrying out miracles and spreading the message of a loving and harmonious existence. Many interpret this as a sign of commonality between the two.
