A History of Wet Dreams in Christianity

Christianity has historically had a rather complicated relationship with wet dreams, often known as nocturnal emissions or involuntarily ejaculation. The concept of wet dreams has been mentioned in the Bible’s New Testament. It is indicated that St. Paul even considered the occurrence of wet dreams as a form of sin and something to be ashamed of. This is rather ironic considering there is no actual mention of the term “wet dreams” in the Bible. Despite this, the Bible does portray wet dreams as something sinful and shameful.

Though wet dreams have not always been seen as sinful, since the Middle Ages, Christianity has been associated with repressive sexual mores.

In the Catholic Church, there is an entire canon law that includes a section on matrimony and sexual relations. This section talks about conjugal rights, relationships and the purpose of marriage. Consensual sexual activities are generally considered to be morally acceptable, however, the Church does actively frown upon masturbatory activities and wet dreams.

Since wet dreams are not something a person actively seeks out, it can be argued that the Church’s views on the matter are misguided. Wet dreams are seen as a natural phenomenon which is generally experienced during puberty, when the body is undergoing a lot of physiological changes.
