Introduction

Christianity has long been associated with traditional values and beliefs, many of which do not specifically embrace individuals who identify as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, or Transgender (LGBT). It’s not uncommon to find that Christian values are interpreted to be incompatible with the LGBT community. However, before one can understand if Christianity is, in fact, against LGBT individuals, one must examine the various aspects upon which this determination is based. With this in mind, we will explore the various facets of this topic and ask if Christianity is, in fact, against LGBT individuals.

The Bible and Christianity

The Christian faith is built upon the Bible which can be broken down into three sections – the Old Testament, New Testament and the Apocrypha. Together these documents detail the beliefs, teachings and values of the Christian faith and can be seen as its moral backbone. Despite the variations of Christian belief that exist, most agree that the Bible is the foundation of their faith.

It is worth noting that the Bible speaks little of, or not at all, on the subject of same-sex relationships. This is due to the fact that same-sex relationships were not understood or distinguished as such during the era in which the Bible was written, first interpreted, and canonized. Evidence of this can be seen in various translations of original texts, where what we now understand as same-sex relationships was understood to be wrong for a variety of reasons.
