What Is Fantasizing?

Fantasizing is defined as forming mental images of what may happen in the future, the possibility of events that have not yet been experienced. It can also involve thinking of daydreaming, imagining situations that do not actually exist. Fantasizing may be seen as preoccupation with wishful thinking, a kind of wish fulfillment. Fantasizing can be an expression of a desire for a particular outcome in real life.

Does Fantasizing In Christianity Constitute A Sin?

The answer to this question is best answered by looking at the teachings of the Bible on fantasizing. According to the Bible, fantasizing is considered to be a sin because it encourages us to focus on irrational thoughts that are contrary to God’s will and His commands.

The Bible specifically states that fantasizing is an abomination to God (Proverbs 6:18). Furthermore, Proverbs 4:14-15 warns against fantasizing in order to plow the path of wickedness, evil and death. For this reason, fantasizing might be perceived as a sin in that it draws one’s attention away from God’s will, and into a realm of sin.

Fantasizing Is A Form Of Idolatry

Fantasizing has also been identified as a form of idolatry, as it tends to shift the focus of one’s attention away from God and towards oneself. Idolatry is defined as any practice or attitude which places something else before God or interferes with our own personal relationship with God, thus preventing us from having a proper relationship with Him. In other words, the act of fantasizing puts us before God, in that we are focused on ourselves instead of Him.

Fantasizing Creates An Attitude Of Selfishness

Moreover, fantasizing may create an attitude of selfishness, as we tend to be focused on our own desires and may not take into consideration the needs and desires of others. This attitude of selfishness can prevent us from seeing the needs of our neighbors, and can create feelings of envy and bitterness towards those who have what we want.
