Christianity is one of the oldest and most influential religions in the world, providing adherents with a set of beliefs and values that shape their lives. This article will serve as an introduction to Christianity by explaining its definition, outlining its major tenets and discussing its history.

At its most basic level, Christianity is the belief in Jesus Christ as the son of God and savior of the world. As it is written in the Bible, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God… And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us” (John 1:1, 14). Followers of Christianity believe that Jesus was the physical manifestation of God, who came to earth to bring salvation and make a way for the remissions of sins. Furthermore, those who accept and believe in Jesus as the son of God will receive an eternal life with Him in Heaven.

The core of Christian belief is also based on scriptures. The Bible contains scriptures which are accepted by all adherents, along with various other texts that are considered sacred depending upon denomination. The most important scripture for Christians is The Holy Bible, which is divided into two main sections—the Old Testament and the New Testament. The Old Testament contains stories of the Israelites and their relationship with God, while the New Testament details the life and ministry of Jesus Christ. Taken together, the Old and the New Testament provides a comprehensive overview of Christian doctrine and practice.

The other major tenet of Christianity is faith. Christians practice faith in the power of God’s love and grace, and through prayer and action, seek to draw closer to a relationship with Him. Prayers are used to express thanks and petitions, and to seek forgiveness, healing and strength. Christian teachings emphasize the importance of acts of service and kindness to others. Acting upon these principles of faith brings an individual closer to a relationship with God and to a life filled with peace, contentment, and joy.
