History
Halloween or All Hallows’ Eve – is widely recognised to originate from Celtic and Christianity sources. Scholars believe that Christian missionaries made deliberate efforts to replace Celtic festivals with Christianones, during early centuries in Britain. The festival, probably derivedfrom Samhain was considered to be a day of remembering, celebrations and prayer. People gathered together to celebrate the dead and welcome the cold season.The Celts lit bonfires on the eve of October 31, and believed it was a time for the two worlds to communicate, with the dead visiting the living.
The modern American-version of Halloween has been heavily influenced by this Celtic celebration, with pagan elements. Its popularity encouraged more Christian churches to establish elaborate services of reading Bible passages, in honor of departed saints. It wasn’t until medieval times that the concept of trick-or-treating began among these sects.
Traditions
After the year 950 A.D., Pope Boniface IV made the Christian holiday known as All Saints’ Day or All Hallows’ Day. To this day, churches participate in celebrating All Saints’ day each November 1 to honor Christian saints, martyrs and the faithful departed. The day before All Saints’ Day is commonly celebrated as Halloween or All Hallows’ Eve.
The Christian tradition of Halloween falls in line with its origins in the Pagan religion, where festivities and celebration were held to engage with deceased family members and spiritual beings. After the Protestant Reformation in the 16th century, Catholics and Protestants started to participate in the celebration.
Customs
Today’s Halloween festivities include the traditional wearing of costumes and masks based on the Celtic traditions. Carving pumpkins to make Jack-o-lanterns is a nod to Celtic tradition in completing sacred rituals to ward off evil spirits. The tradition of trick-or-treating rooted in the All Souls’ Day Parade, which began in the Middle Ages when Christians would beg for ‘soul cakes.’-breads and hard tack baked with raisins in the shape of a cross.
This custom was ceremonial and carried the message of peace and goodwill towards all. The ritual of ‘Trick-or-Treat’in many neighborhoods is a way of Christian charities and churches to commemorate their triumph in the struggle between good and evil.
Symbols
Certain symbols of Halloween have an association to Christianity due to the roots of the holiday in Celtic and Christianity. Pumpkins, bats, witches and cats are all symbols which have been associated with Halloween since the turn of the century.Pumpkins, for example, were illuminated with candles on ‘All Hallow’s Eve’ symbolizing the flame of the returning sun after winter.
The Christian concept of Heaven, Hell and Purgatory was widely accepted by the end of the 13th century that resulted in the increasing popularity of Halloween. It was believed that the dead return to earth on ‘All Hallow’s Eve’ which is why certain symbols were used as protection from these returning spirits. Even today many churches display symbols of Halloween as a reminder of the good comes from evil.
Connection
Halloween has its origin in the Celtic religion, but Christianity over the course of many centuries has made its own adjustments to the way it is celebrated. As time has gone by, Christianity has merged Celtic traditions with the Christian ideals of charity and the belief of the dead being able to identify with returning visitors. Therefore, the final outcome is a holiday nowadays called ‘Halloween.’
