Christianity: Its History and Development
Christianity is one of the most influential religions in the world today, with over 2 billion followers worldwide. It began in the year 30 A.D when Jesus of Nazareth was publicly baptised by John the Baptist. Christianity quickly gained traction among the Jewish communities and began to spread to Non-Jewish communities.
The first Christian community became established in Jerusalem, where followers of Jesus gathered together to pray and worship. As their faith grew, it spread to other major cities such as Antioch and Rome. Around this time, the Christian church was organized into a hierarchical structure, with bishops, priests and deacons handling different aspects of the church’s affairs and doctrines.
In the 4th century, Christianity was formally recognised as a religion by the Roman Emperor Constantine. This signaled an official shift in the history of Christianity, and allowed the religion to spread quickly and widely. This prompted the beginnings of monasticism, and religious orders like the Benedictines and Franciscans were established. Thus, Christianity began to spread even further throughout Europe.
The Middle Ages saw a huge surge in the popularity of Christianity. This was largely due to the reformation in the Church and the revival of the Catholic Church. In the 11th century, a new approach to theology called Scholasticism emerged. This was centred around the idea of rationalising belief and involved reasoning and logic being employed to explain the teachings of the Church.

In the 20th century, many churches developed a communion of saints approach, which reinforced the notion of unity and solidarity amongst all Christians. One such initiative is the World Council of Churches, which is a fellowship of more than 300 churches from different parts of the world which strive to promote fellowship and harmonious relations between its members.

Education and learning were seen by the Church as essential to helping believers reach a deeper understanding of their faith and to grow in the knowledge and understanding of their beliefs.
