Significant Figures
Christianity has been a powerful religious force for centuries and today is the largest of the world’s religions, holding approximately 33 percent of the total population. The spiritual leader of the Catholic Church, known as the Pope, is essentially the leader of the global Christian community. He is traditionally elected by the College of Cardinals, the senior-most members of the Catholic Church hierarchy. Other significant Christian leaders include Protestant denominational leaders, such as the Archbishop of Canterbury in the Anglican Church.
Pope Francis
Though there have been many Popes, one of the most well-known is Pope Francis. Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, he was elected in 2013 to lead the Roman Catholic Church. Eastern Orthodoxy
Eastern Orthodoxy is an ancient form of Christianity that has several ecclesiastical leaders and many followers. The Eastern Orthodox Church is an autonomous branch of Christianity and is distinct from the authority of the Pope. Within the Eastern Orthodox Church there are leaders known as Patriarchs who are considered to be the spiritual heads of the various branches of the Eastern Orthodox Church. These Patriarchs include the Ecumenical Patriarch of the Eastern Orthodox Church, who is considered to be the spiritual leader of Orthodoxy and the leader of the Church of Constantinople. Other notable Patriarchs include the Patriarchs of Alexandria, Antioch and Jerusalem.
Protestant Denominations
The Protestant Reformation of 16th-century Europe resulted in a dramatic reformation of the Catholic Church. This resulted in the formation of various Protestant denominations including Lutheranism, Anglicanism and Calvinism, which are among the most prominent Protestant denominations today. In each of these denominations there is a spiritual leader who is elected to lead the Church and interpret and interpret the teachings of Jesus. The most important of these figures is the Ecumenical Patriarch, who serves as the spiritual leader of Orthodoxy and is regarded as the first among equals among all Christian leaders. He works to maintain a dialogue between the Orthodox and Catholic Churches, as well as between the Orthodox and Protestant denominations.
