Interpretations of Scripture
Christianity has a long and complex history and its followers have been divided into differing sects since the earliest days of its existence. At the heart of these divisions have been interpretations of the Christian holy scripture, the Bible, which is seen as the source of Christian truth and morality. It is unsurprising that over the centuries of development, different religious groups have looked to distinguish themselves from one another. These differing interpretations of the Bible, often known as denominations, can be both subtle and extreme in their divergence from one another.
One example of this is seen in the Roman Catholic and the Orthodox Churches. Whilst holding to the same core beliefs, there are still some fundamental differences between them, the most obvious being that the Orthodox Church does not accept the Catholic Church’s primacy, especially after the Great Schism of 1054 AD. A further major source of difference between differing Christian denominations is the way in which they practice their faith. This includes the varying forms of religious observance, the way in which the Eucharist is consumed, the role of lay people within the Church, and the use of certain traditional rituals. This often occurs as a result of deep internal dissent and disagreement, when extremists take the lead in creating a reformed faction or sect.
Another element to consider is the influence of politics, especially in the case of the sects that developed in the United States in the 19th and early 20th centuries, such as the Mormon and Presbyterian churches. The creation of these sects was partly based on the rejection of certain political ideologies and was, to some degree, driven by the need of certain Christian believers to establish what they deemed to be the “true” faith.
Religious Tolerance
The creation of sects and denominations has not always been accompanied by good feeling between the different groups. Periods of polemics and hostility between the different churches were not uncommon in the past, often leading to heated arguments and disputes both in public and within the governing bodies of the church. In more recent times, however, an effort has been made by religious authorities and other prominent figures to promote greater levels of tolerance and understanding between the different denominations and sects. Some of the better known examples of such separatist movements include the Quakers and the Plymouth Brethren; groups which originally sought to reject the prevailing forms of Christianity and move towards a simpler, more authentic approach. Nevertheless, this is increasingly becoming a minority opinion within today’s diverse and ever-changing Christian landscape.
Christian Unity
Regardless of the differences which exist between the various Christian denominations, it is important to remember that there a numerous areas of common ground which exist between the sects and faith communities. This includes shared beliefs such as the existence of a divine being, a life of repentance and the desire to serve and love others. In this sense, it is important to remember the core values of Christian faith, and the commonalities which unite us as believers, rather than the subtle or extreme differences which divide us.
Indeed, the idea of Christian unity has become an increasingly important concept in recent years, with a focus on the need to reconcile and bridge the gap between the different faiths and denominations. This is seen in the start of numerous initiatives which seek to create a greater level of understanding and tolerance between Christian groups, and also to promote greater levels of spiritual realization and growth.
Ultimately, the divisions which exist between the various denominations of Christianity are complex and multi-layered. Whilst there are still certain underlying tensions between the different faiths, it is important to recognize the great efforts which are being made in order to foster understanding and unity, and remind ourselves of the common core beliefs which hold us together as Christians, regardless of denomination.
Evangelization
Another issue related to different Christian sects is the role of mission and evangelization. Whilst varying denominations may take different approaches to spreading the Word of God, there is also an underlying overlap in their desire to promote the faith amongst non-Christians. This includes short term mission trips in order to help those in need, or long-term evangelization on a greater scale.
Whilst differing denominations may have different approaches to evangelization, they are united by the notion that they are called to spread the faith, regardless of the specific methods employed. This unified mission is seen in the various ecumenical efforts which have been launched over the last few decades in order to bring about a greater level of understanding, respect and unity between all the Christian denominations. As such, the issue of mission and evangelization is one which is common to all Christian faith communities, and in principle, is free from denominational differences and divergences.
Converting to Different Sects
For those who are not raised as part of one Christian denomination, but rather come to the faith later in life, the choice of which denomination to join can be a difficult one. As such, it is important to do some research into the different groups and their beliefs in order to find the one which best suits the individual’s spiritual journey.
In this respect, it is important to keep in mind that each denomination has its own unique features and emphases which they bring to the faith. It is essential that would-be converts understand and respect the subtle and sometimes extreme differences which exist between each denomination in order to ensure that they make the right decision for them as individuals. Ultimately, all denominations share core Christian values but there may still be a need for followers to find the one which resonates with them most strongly.
The Current State of Christianity
In today’s world, there are a vast array of Christian denominations and sects, all of which have a place together in the universe of faith. This recent trend of division and fragmentation is seen by some as a sign of weakness and instability within the faith, whilst others see it as a sign of the dynamism and vibrancy of Christianity.

In recent times, technology has also had a profound impact on how different denominations of Christianity interact with one another. Social media in particular has been a great tool for connecting with other believers from different backgrounds and denominations, providing an environment for shared understanding and mutual learning.
The rise of social media has also made it easier for members of different Christian denominations to discuss and debate the differences between their faiths. Whilst for the most part this has been done in a respectful and tolerant way, it is important to bear in mind that disagreements can still occur, and the need for understanding and respect remains as critical as ever.
In general, technology and social media have enabled a certain level of dialogue between different denominations which has previously not been possible. This is certainly a positive development and one which should be welcomed as a way of fostering greater understanding and unity between the various faiths.
The Future of Denominations
It is difficult to predict where the various denominations of Christianity will go in the future, given the vast and ever changing complexities of the faith. Nevertheless, the safe prediction is that the many varied strands and sects which together make up the Christian faith will continue to exist in society and bring both positive and negative development to its followers.
The need for greater understanding and cooperation between the different denominations will remain as strong as ever, as will the need for tolerance, respect and unity. It is hoped that over time, the differences between the various denominations will be resolved, and a consolidated understanding of Christian faith will be established.
Going forward, Christians should continue to strive towards creating a spirit of unity and understanding between themselves, regardless of denomination or sect. This is necessary both as a testimony to the richness and vibrancy of the faith, as well as a reminder of the common core beliefs which bind us together as believers.
